To avoid the fate of becoming a person with perfectly curated Pinterest boards and a mess of an actual creative life, I have developed a plan. This is revolutionary, people. Are you ready for it?
I am going to take what I see on Pinterest, and I'm going to do something. Make those DIYs. Cook those recipes! BUY ALL OF THE CLOTHES. Well, maybe not that, as to avoid massive credit card debt. But I will use my clothing boards to work on my fashion sense within my own closet.
I'm going to aim for one project a week, although I'm not holding myself to any strict rules or guidelines. I'd like it to be a fun process, much like Pinterest itself, with the additional satisfaction of trying my hand at some new projects. And, bonus points-- the holidays are approaching, so if something goes particularly well, you can bet your bottom that someone will find it under their Christmas tree. {Well, likely not the following two projects, as neither are particularly suited to gift-giving without offhandedly insulting the recipient. But those reindeer-face cookies? Perfect!}
Up first are these two pins: Homemade Deodorant (via How About Orange) and The Oil Cleansing Method (via Simple Mom).

And my versions:

I was able to whip up batches of both recipes in less time than it would have taken me just to search for my car keys to drive to the store, and the ingredients cost much less than the store-bought goods if you break it down to the cost per batch. I just stored them in some old containers I had. {The deodorant is in a Nivea lotion container-- sorry for the white on white; I wish you could see it better, but it was the best jar I had!} I use the mini-spatula/scraper to help me get the deodorant out of the container without getting gunk under my fingernails. It's liquidy in the picture since I heated the coconut oil a bit to mix ingredients, but it is normally solid like stick deodorant at room temperature and melts as it touches your skin.
I had heard great things about the homemade deodorant, and love that I'd be able to avoid the aluminum and other nasty ingredients that are in most commerical products. As for the olive oil cleaner, I
Big, huge, blinking-marque-sign caveat: Proceed at your own risk if you decide to try out these DIY items yourself. I literally just started trying out these methods over the weekend, so I have not had enough time to adequately judge whether the homemade deodorant will cause me to lose friends or if the face cleaner will make me break out like a hormonal teenager. I'm simply writing about these projects as a part of my quest to use Pinterest more interactively, and will have to return with a more thorough assessment of the recipes at a later date, if y'all are interested.
I'm curious to hear-- is Pinterest mainly visual inspiration for you? Or have you gotten some inspiration for hands-on projects from the site? And, more importantly, would YOU put olive oil on your face?

this is a good plan. i've recently become a little frustrated with pinterest. i tried some children's art projects I pinned and the results were less than fantastic (i'll probably blog about it soon.) and for every winning recipe I've found there, there are 2 that have been kind of let downs. I think I've learned that pretty photography does not a good project make.
ReplyDeleteI've been making and using homemade deodorant for 2 years (haven't lost any friends yet) and the oil cleansing method for over a year. For the oil, I melt 1-2 tsp of beeswax and 1-2 tsp of shea butter and add to my oil. When cooled, it's just enough to firm it up so you can scoop it instead of drip it. I also add a few drops essential oils to make it smell pretty.
ReplyDeleteAs for pinterest, I use it both for inspiration and for gathering recipes and tutorial.
I made some homemade deodorant (looks like a similar recipe) a year or so ago, and it didn't really work for me. I keep wanting natural deodorant, but something with my body chemistry just doesn't like it.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in this oil cleansing method though!
I mostly use pinterest for saving pretty pictures I find, I don't spend a lot of time on there because I can definitely see how it could be a time suck.
I use Pinterest for saving pics only. I honestly am barely on it (as you can tell from my sparse boards). I use Tom's natural deodorant & am too chicken to make my own. I have put olive oil on my face to relieve dry skin but it didn't help & I hated the feeling of it. I laughed. Out . Loud when I read how you can't stand greasy anything near your face bc I'm the same way & especially when my husband comes into close contact with my face after eating pizza.
ReplyDeleteI do "waste time" on pinterest. But it is such a stress relief for me. Some people play angry birds, I Pin. It always makes me to feel like I am being creative even if my space doesn't allow me to be. It also makes me feel organized... about the only place! I am finding patterns to things that I like which is helpful in pairing down things in my home, wardrobe etc. I don't know. I like it because it lets me dream. Some of those dreams are attainable, too. I also have homemade deodorant in my boards. I have been wanting to do it for years. I found a recipe using it in an old deodorant container. Can't wait to here how you like yours!!! I use coconut oil as a moisturizer at night. Soft skin!
ReplyDeleteI just made some recipes I found on Pinterest, and it did feel really good to actually put the inspiration to good use! Please keep us updated on the deodorant, I tried several natural ones with little luck (and a lot of Molly Shannon-esque moments...) but I never tried homemade! Hope it works great!
