Walking through the library recently, I was struck with a bout of nostalgia for those summer reading clubs that I used to partake in during the summer months-- you know, those programs where we used to pledge that we'd read a certain number of books over the course of a summer. We'd fill out our name and state our reading commitment on a sheet of paper cut in the shape of a sun, and proudly tape it up in the children's section of the library. I can't remember what we received for participating, but I always had fun trying to read as many books as I could during my breaks from school.
After recounting those summer days where a stack of books was sometimes my favorite companion, I got the urge to recreate a similar charm. Rather than looking at the multiple stacks of books around my condo as just another item on my to-do list, I want to celebrate the written word this summer. Between the vacations I have scheduled and afternoons I plan to spend on a blanket in the park, I determined that it's the perfect opportunity to commit to a season of reading.
Would you like to join me?
I know many of us are busy with jobs, families, travel and other warm-weather activities, but I'd like to invite you all to join me in this commitment to reading this summer, from June 1st to September 1st. This is just a casual, low-pressure way for us to keep track of our reading goals, no matter if you read one book or ten. I promise there will be no book reports or discussions, and no book police that come after you if you aren't reading! :)
If you'd like to join me, just comment below with either a list of books you'd like to get to this summer, or simply a general number of books that you hope to get to. If you happen to blog about your pledge {perhaps with the list of books you're planning on reading} be sure to post a link in the comments so we can be sure to visit each others' blogs, since I for one love to see what others are reading. On September 1st, I'll do a wrap up post so that we can see if we achieved our goals, and I'll do a little giveaway of an Amazon gift card among those who participate!
Now go hit up the library, friends :)

I'll start! I pledge to read 5 books this summer. I'm sorta cheating by starting with one {or two!} that I'm already half-through, but that's totally okay since I make the rules :)
ReplyDelete- Bossypants by Tina Fey
- When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron
- Pour Your Heart into It by Howard Schultz
- True Colors by Kristin Hannah
- The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty
I love reading and really want to try to read more often!! Now that I am my own boss, you'd think that I could allow myself more time to read but I shamefully haven't. I am going to start this summer! You've given me an extra push with this so I'll definitely join you!!
ReplyDeleteOur library doesn't have a very wide selection of books so it's hard for me to have a wishlist. I have a BIG list of books that people have recommended to me and I just bring that and search and search until I find one that they actually have. That's what I'll be doing! Hopefully I can read one book a month, at the least!
What a fun idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally in ... I would be reading all summer anyway ... Books are really my first true love.
I'm going to estimate I'll read ... at least 5 books. Maybe more.
I'll blog about it at ThoseCrazySchuberts.com
xo
I'm in! Love to! Happy to go with the flow.. x
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I used to love to read five books and get a cheeseburger at In-N-Out. I guess I am too old for that. Great idea
ReplyDeleteOur local Pizza Hut did Book-it over the summer. You could read 5 books and earn a free mini pizza! We loved it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read about 20 books this summer, but I'll try for the realistic goal of 7 books. I'll blog about it over at sixtyfourcolorbox.worpress.com. This will get me going on adding posts to the book page I made.
First book is "The 19th Wife"
I love the idea =) Every Summer I try to catch up on my reading, I usually make a grid, fill it out, with the author, title of the book and the number of pages. In the end of summer it's awesome to see that you read so many pages!
ReplyDeleteI think this year my goal will be around 15/20. I've a huge list of books to read but I usually end up reading Agatha Christie's books that I haven't read (it's becoming harder!) I'll link you in my blog!
I'm in! I have something like 265 books on my to-read list, I don't have a problem!
ReplyDeleteThis summer I hope to read 10 books, 15 would be great.
I recently finished "A Visit from the Goon Squad" (I didn't like it so much) and am almost finished with "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest." I'm also reading "We All Fall Down" by Nic Sheff. After those are done we're moving on to "Onward."
When people asked what I had planned for summer vacation, in my head I thought "read." But I said something about going to California (which is true, but not the thing I most anticipated). I love your phrase "celebrate the written word."
ReplyDeleteMy goal....drum roll....8 books. I'm currently reading Donald Miller's A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. I'll give an update on my progress.

Summer summer time! I did the Pizza Hut thing too. I loved Reading Rainbow. Here is my list:
ReplyDelete- The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone
- Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
- A Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
- Saltwater Buddha by Jaimal Yogis
Hmmm, where is my mind this summer? Food and the beach!
Okay I'm in! I have several books purchased but not read so I'll put 3 of those on my list and then I've got pressure on me to read Stieg Larsson from a certain someone who keeps staring at me from across the room...Mr.Husband has things about it he needs to discuss!
ReplyDeleteSo:
Waiter Rant by Steve Dublanica
The Widow Clicquot by Tilar Mazzeo
Role Models by John Waters
We will see what else gets thrown in...
I've finished my first book! Here's the blog about it: http://sixtyfourcolorbox.wordpress.com/2011/06/14/summer-reading-book-1/
ReplyDelete@All ~ I'm loving all of you for participating! And you are giving me lots of ideas for books to add to my own list, so thanks for that as well! XO.
ReplyDeleteI'm so in, although I'm unsure of how many books just yet. I'll say a minimum of 5 and those 5 will be:
ReplyDeleteCutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
The Truth About Stories by Thomas King
Global Girlfriends by Stacey Edgar
The Birth House by Ami McKay
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Excited to hear about all the books people are reading!
Gah! So, I pledged to read at least 5 books .... and I just finished #4 since June 1.... Um, overachiever?
ReplyDeleteAlso, the book I just finished I would TOTALLY recommend for June!
It is a Young Adult novel - but completely reminded me of high school and end of school, summer is just starting, etc.
Party by Tom Leveen.
I read the WHOLE thing in 1 sitting.
xo
Just finished book two! I'm loving this reading a book a week system I've got going. Here's the write up: http://sixtyfourcolorbox.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/summer-reading-book-2/
ReplyDeleteAre there going to be buttons for this challenge? I would love to add one to my blog.
